*listening to scary winter ambience and reading scary winter book*
I’m scared :(
#it’s Dark Matter by Michelle Paver#more creepy than outright scary#good book for reading at night#I have a lot of thoughts about it and all of them revolve around it being like a 2.5-3/5 star book#middling in that like the bones of a good story are there but it just doesn’t go far enough in any aspect of what it’s engaging with#yet another book hindered by the epistolary format as well#and lack of verisimilitude#because like. if it hadn’t been epistolary it wouldn’t have mattered so much that the prose wasn’t convincingly 1937#you really just have to nail dialog and thoughts and if the rest is only loosely period then like whatever#but a diary??#sigh#just an aggressively okay book#also extremely unsubtle#which I’ve noticed is a new thing that has been bothering me about certain books lately#diary author: I could tell they didn’t like me because I was lower class#book author: yeah I think class was a huge theme for me#like….#it was pretty good at being creepy though I’ll give it that#I just wanted MORE#woah nellie#and don’t even get me started about the queer aspect#also frightfully unsubtle#what is compelling about epistolary novels is the reading between the lines#because most people aren’t aware enough of exactly what’s going on in their head to spell it all out like that#sigh sigh#alas
